Project 365 Day 68

It was so nice out today, so we went for a walk. This cemetery is right down the street from us, I’ve taken some photos there before. Saw a bunch of robins, it must be Spring!

DW Field Park (Project 365 Day 57)

Well, I finished and presented my term project today, so I finally could go out and take some pictures without feeling guilty for not doing homework. :) I found some birds I haven’t seen before (I’m a n00b to birding still!)- couldn’t get good pics since they were way out in the lake, but tentative ids are tufted ducks, red-breasted mergansers (male and female), and one lonely pied-billed grebe. Here’s a link to the Facebook album for the bird IDs.

And here are the rest of the photos. Day 57 photo is labeled, that’s the neutral density filter one.

Review of Lowepro 202AW

So I promised a review of my new Lowepro bag, after trying it out. Overall, I’ve very happy with it. It was comfortable, convenient, and fit everything I need (I prefer to just keep everything in one bag, and not transfer it) without being too bulky.

Here’s what I had in it:
Nikon D5000 with 70-300mm zoom lens attached
15-88mm lens
35mm lens
Sunpak flashgun + flash sync cord
Extra batteries for cameras, flash, phone
Multiple small accessories, like: Remote shutter release, battery chargers, extra batteries for cameras, flash, phone, Macro filters, neutral density filter
Phone + wallet
Galaxy Tab 10.1
Tripod

Quite a good amount of stuff. Some of the reviews seemed to say that a lens over 200mm wouldn’t fit in the camera slot, but my 300mm lens fit with no problem. The bag sling over your shoulder, and when you swing it around to your chest (without taking it off) it has a side pocket to insert of remove your camera.

It has a compartment at the top to stash accessories, it has a sling pocket in the back, and compression strap to slide things under.

It also has a small pocket on the front, where I stashed battery chargers and cords.

One of the features I really like is that it has a strap and puch on the side to attach a tripod. It’s a little awkward to get the tripod in and out, but it’s better than most of the alternatives, and once it’s in, it’s very secure.

Also, since it’s a “AW” or all-weather model, it has a neat little weather protector. It tucks into a flap in the back panel, and velcroes shut, but you can pull it out, and wrap it all the way around the bag.

Here’s a picture in action. I didn’t have the side strap buckled as you can see, but if you’re going to be walking for a while and don’t need to slide it around in front of you, it buckles across your chest to the strap, and makes it much more secure.

So, the summarize, I definitely give it 5 stars! It’s a little pricier than similar bags, but you know you’re getting good quality with this brand, and none of the other bags have all of these features, either.

Project 365 Day 48

This is my new Lowepro bag, it’s the 202AW. It’s been on my wishlist for a while, but I decided if I’m doing more of these Audobon Society bird excursions, I really need a good camera bag. Also, I was holding off because I really want a sling bag that goes on my left shoulder and not my right, but I’ve given up hope that those exist- at least with all the same features this one has.

I’ll post a full review tomorrow, after I try it out. But here’s a link if you’re interested. In the picture, my camera has the 70-300mm zoom lens on it, to give you an idea of the size. It hold everything I need (even my tablet) without being too bulky.

Project 365 Day 40

This is my new 6-stop neutral density filter. I’m super excited to use it. :) I don’t generally get to do long exposure photos around here, since I usually do to parks, and they all close right at sunset and open after sunrise, so I can’t get those really early or late light photos. But I think this will be fun!

I was thinking while taking this, that already I feel more comfortable taking photos in artificial light inside, and using a flash. I still prefer to be out in natural light, but I think I’m already on my way to meeting my goal for this project.
